Creating a love of reading is so important for young children. A two year old is starting to understand the world more. It is such a fun age. Two year olds are beginning to talk and can actually hold conversations!
At this age, children are learning so quickly. They learn something new everyday. Encourage their curiosity with books! This is a list of our favorite books!
Look and Find Books
My daughter LOVES look and find books. I know they don’t usually have a lot of text, but they are great books to have a conversation about! My daughter loves to look for all the items in the big picture. We talk about what she is looking for and she will point to it when she finds it. These are great books for learning! Below, I will link some of the first look and find books that are more for toddler aged children.
Learning Books
Two year olds learn so quickly! Everyday my daughter learns something new. It amazes me. We have really been focusing on numbers and letters. We repeat these daily, as repetition is linked to memory and learning. I love number books that we can count on each page. I also like alphabet books that we can practice the letters. These books help her recognize numbers and letters and gives us more repetitions.
Besides numbers and letters, I love books that focus on color, shapes, and animals. These books allow much more repetition of basic skills and encourages my daughter to remember these things. I will link some of my favorite below.
Character Books
My daughter has started to really like specific characters. Some of her favorites are Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Elmo, Doc Mcstuffins, Daniel Tiger, and Toy Story. When we read books with these characters in them, she is especially excited. She loves to read these books and it helps her want to read even more. That desire to read is so important to foster in young children.
Whatever characters your child likes, find those books with the characters to read! I will link some of my favorite books below.
Llama Llama Books
My daughter loves the “Llama Llama” book series. There are some early board books that are really good for little ones since they are shorter and simple. There are Llama Llama books for seasons, bedtime, morning time, and even a movement one. One of our favorites is Llama Llama Loves to Read. I really like this author’s writing style. Another book from her is “Little Excavator” and this is another favorite!
Lift a Flap Books
When my daughter was younger, she really liked Lift a Flap books. She had a lot of thicker flap books, since she wasn’t as careful with books. Now that she’s a little older, she still enjoys these books, but now she likes books with thinner flaps. These books with thinner flaps are usually longer books and have more flaps, which she really enjoys. We really enjoy these “Peek a Flap” books about animals!
Nursery Rhyme or Song Books
My daughter loves to sing. She can sing most songs almost by herself. Nursery Rhyme books or books with songs like “Wheels on the Bus” are some of her favorites. She loves to sing the songs and we follow along with the words on the book. She can even “read” these by herself, because she can sing the songs. This repetition is so good for her and encourages a love for books as well.
We especially love this “ABC 123 Learning Song Book.” It plays the music when you press the buttons and has the words for the songs on each page. It is definitely a favorite!
Easily Repeatable Books
Another category of books that my daughter loves is easily repeatable books. She can pick up on certain phrases in a book if it is repeated over and over. She enjoys this so much, because she can add in and read with me. In particular, she loves “Five Little Monkeys” and “Little Blue Truck.” Also “Green Eggs and Ham” is great for repeating phrases.
Longer Books
Two year olds don’t have the best attention span, but they are definitely getting better. My daughter can sit through a few “longer” books now. I actually like reading her a little longer books from time to time so she learns to sit and listen. This isn’t always possible, but this is a good challenge for her. Also, longer books usually have more teachable moments in them. Whether it is developing a certain character or just remembering the story plot. These are good things to keep in mind while your child grows and develops. We love the book series “5 Minute Stories.”
I hope you enjoyed this list of books for two year olds! Hopefully you found a new favorite book to read!
