Looking for a fun, engaging activity for your toddler or child during the Christmas season? This DIY felt Christmas Tree is just the activity you need. This tree lets your little one play and enjoy Christmas, without getting into the real Christmas tree!
This DIY Felt Christmas Tree is pretty simple to make, but if you don’t have time there are many options online to buy.
Keep reading to find out how I made this DIY Felt Christmas Tree!
Materials
- 1 yard green felt
- Felt in different colors
- Cookie Cutters or paper templates for ornaments
- Glue Gun
- Command Strips or Wall Velcro to hang the tree on the wall
I didn’t measure the green felt exactly but buying 1 yard worked for me and I had leftover felt. I also just bought pieces of felt in multiple different colors in the craft section. I used cookie cutters to make the ornaments, but you could also just print out templates on paper.
Making the Tree
- Fold the big piece of green felt in half.
- Draw a line from the top of the folded corner to the bottom at an angle.
- Draw lines to resemble branches on a Christmas Tree (pictured below).
- Cut out the tree.
- Unfold to reveal the tree!
- Hang the tree on a wall with command strips or wall velcro.
Cut out felt. Unfold to reveal tree.
Making the Ornaments
- Trace around the cookie cutters (or paper template) on a piece of felt.
- Cut out the shapes.
- If you want to add more detail, cut out detail pieces in the felt and hot glue it to the ornament.
I made snowflakes, bulbs, stockings, snowmen, gingerbread men, reindeer, presents, candy canes, and a star.
Trace around the cookie cutter. Cut out shape.
You can trace around a paper template.
Play Ideas
The felt ornaments will stick directly to the green felt tree. This is great for children to decorate and redecorate the tree however they want. This is also a great fine motor and sensory activity.
Children can also play with you! Lead children in identifying colors or the different shapes!
